The Opportunity Party could determine who wins the New Zealand election 2026

After weeks of watching the two major parties slide towards a dead heat where neither can form government, I make my initial prediction for the 2026 New Zealand general election. We have seen Prime Minister Christopher Luxon say to the media “Cry me a river”, when questioned about the cost of living. Labour’s Chris Hipkins delivered an unusually fiery campaign launch before offering more piecemeal policy. As others have noticed it seems to be a campaign heavy on fearmongering – National talking about Labour and the left-wing parties obsession with taxes, whilst Labour consistently asks if we can afford another 3 years of National.

Uninspiring? I thought so too.

More inspiring this week has been the release of The Opportunity Party’s bottom line conditions yesterday. I am expecting Opportunity Party to pick up 7% of the party vote. That would get 8 candidates into Parliament. With the election race starting to devolve into two clear camps, whomever Opportunity work with could be decisive.

The right wing

I do not think that Labour and National will improve much – if at all – in the remainder of the campaign period. Both seem fairly determined, without actually doing so, to lose the election. Their overall support in terms of a percentage of the party vote will remain in a tight band. At 30% that would get them 36 seats a piece and leave 48 seats, plus any caused by a Parliamentary overhang.

It is the rise of A.C.T., New Zealand First and the Greens, despite being at different ends of the spectrum, that I find interesting. Were A.C.T. and the Greens able to gain leverage on National and Labour respectively, the contrast would become even more stark. I see A.C.T. and New Zealand First picking up 9% of the party vote/11 seats a piece. David Seymour will hold Epsom; New Zealand First will be reliant on its 9% of the party vote.

Which would leave National unable to form a coalition. It would make Christopher Luxon the first one-term National Prime Minister in history.

The left wing

As for the left wing of New Zealand politics, I can see the Greens picking up 14%, giving them 16 M.P.’s. Te Pati Maori will revive slightly from its near death bed appearance. I have not heard a squeak out of them the entire campaign so far. I have seen no campaign material, signs or billboards anywhere. Have they have even released their party list yet? If T.P.M. do, I see them getting no more than 3% of the party vote/4 seats.

This is an election race where coalition deals might be writing themselves. National and New Zealand First have point-blank ruled out The Opportunity Party. Meanwhile A.C.T. think that their policies are unrealistic, but Mr Seymour is trying to keep an open mind.

  1. I’ve had enough election already and these predictions are now merely tiresome. Leave until the first of November before you do another one.
