Tongariro National Park – a major income earner in the central North Island (R. Glennie)

The Opportunity Party, led by Qiulae Wong, has reached 6% in the most recent Roy Morgan poll. And at a time when voter frustration is reaching levels unheard of, this is notable.

This is historic for several reasons:

  • No other party that has never been to Parliament before has met the 5% threshold in a poll, or in an election
  • It points to potentially historic levels of frustration with the major parties in the M.M.P. system
  • Opportunity would bring 7 M.P.s to Parliament, who would be Qiulae Wong (Leader), Daniel Eb (D. Leader), Kayla Kingdon-Bebb, Jessica Hammond, Jamie Attenborough,
    Dave Bainbridge-Zafar, and Bianca Beebe

Right now, National are sticking to what their donors want, despite being unpopular with a lot of people. Failing policies Cook Strait ferries debacle, an L.N.G. terminal despite the falling demand, the stubbornly high cost of living.

Right now, Labour is rudderless and adrift. Its leader, Chris Hipkins seems equally determined to stick to a philosophy espoused by former deputy leader of Labour and Minister of Finance Grant Robertson. The philosophy of centrist incrementalism, which is not even akin to nibbling around the edges of a matter, seems to be ingrained in Labour. It is particularly prevalent in its senior Members of Parliament. These include Carmel Sepuloni, finance Spokesperson Barbara Edmonds and others. The only Labour M.P. that I see with potential for change is foreign affairs spokesperson Vanushi Walters. Unless something dramatic happens, I see no prospect of Labour winning the election.

With New Zealand First having shifted to the right, there appears to be a space opening on the spectrum. Moderates from National, who had time for socially liberal and environmentally responsible policies, will have felt put out by the government of Prime Minister Christopher Luxon. Environmental organizations such as Greenpeace, as well as Forest and Bird, refused to attend their 2026 annual conference.

The same might be said too for the moderates of New Zealand First, having had to watch the pro-mining/drilling faction led by Shane Jones take hold. How many of them have felt the need to walk away?

Opportunity Party are aware of this developing vacuum. Several members, including Dr. Kayla Kingdon-Bebb are touting their environmental credentials as candidates in 2026. The party is also pushing an environmentally friendly economic agenda, including a strong policy on the marine environment.

New Zealand is a country where the environment is one of our major drawcards. I work in the rental car sector and see evidence on an almost daily basis at work of clients having visited national parks or gone on conservation friendly activities. The same clean, healthy environment is why so many of our businesses have a good track record overseas. This is something that corporate boards both here and abroad are starting to notice as well.

No one gains here from desecrating the environment. Tens of thousands of jobs both here and abroad rely on it continuing to be one of our major exports.

The parties that hold the power in the Beehive do not seem keen on understanding and respecting that. And the parties that aspire to be in the Beehive seem to be crippled by infighting. Te Pati Maori seems to be crippled by infighting. Labour is leaderless and the the Greens are seen by many voters as immature.

The election is still 5 months away. In politics that is a long time. Opportunity Party know this. They also know that there is a significant chunk of the voting population who say that a vote for a party outside of Parliament is a wasted one.

Never. The only wasted vote is the one that never gets cast, or goes to a joke party like the old McGillicuddy Serious Party. The Opportunity Party acknowledge this.
